Healthy Aging Across Populations: Dietary Patterns, Micronutrient Adequacy, and Lifestyle Recommendations
The field of aging research is increasingly focused on the complex interplay between diet, micronutrient status, and lifestyle factors that collectively shape the trajectory of healthy aging. As global populations age, understanding the determinants of healthy aging has become critical for reducing the burden of age-related diseases and maintaining functional independence. Despite significant advancements, questions remain regarding the optimal dietary patterns, micronutrient needs, and lifestyle modifications that can best support health span, especially in the context of diverse populations with differing biological, metabolic, and sociocultural backgrounds. With cardiometabolic, cognitive, inflammatory, and oxidative stress mechanisms implicated in biological aging, the need to clarify how modifiable factors influence these pathways is pressing.Recent studies have underscored the potential of Mediterranean and other culturally tailored dietary patterns to reduce risk for chronic diseases and preserve cognitive and metabolic function. Moreover, research increasingly highlights the importance of lifestyle elements, such as physical activity, sleep quality, chronotype, and meal timing, in moderating aging-related processes. However, the translation of these findings into practical, population-specific recommendations remains hampered by heterogeneity across studies, underrepresentation of certain groups (such as by sex, age, metabolic status, and sociocultural variables), and ongoing debates on the precise contributions of individual nutrients and behaviors. This Research Topic focuses on studies examining the links between diet, micronutrients, lifestyle factors, and healthy aging, emphasizing comparative and population-specific research. We particularly welcome contributions providing practical The objective is to identify, compare, and synthesize evidence linking specific diets and lifestyle approaches to biological, clinical, and functional outcomes of aging, with the ultimate goal of generating actionable, evidence-based recommendations tailored to diverse population needs. This Research Topic is limited to studies examining links between diet, micronutrients, and lifestyle factors with healthy aging, emphasizing comparative and population-specific research. We particularly welcome contributions providing practical insights and recommendations. To gather further insights in this area, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Comparative effects of dietary patterns (e.g., Mediterranean, plant-based, traditional diets) on aging outcomeso Role of micronutrient adequacy and supplementation in age-related healtho Influence of physical activity, sleep, chronotype, and meal timing on biological agingo Population-specific differences in diet and lifestyle impacts by sex, age, metabolic status, and sociocultural factorso Development and evaluation of food-based and lifestyle recommendations for healthy agingWe welcome observational and interventional studies, reviews, meta-analyses, clinical trials, and studies focusing on translational and implementation research.
