Hemodynamic Monitoring, Cardiovascular Instability, and Point-of-Care Ultrasound in Critical Care
Haemodynamic instability is a defining challenge of critical illness, and the tools used to monitor, interpret, and act on haemodynamic data have evolved dramatically over recent decades. This Research Topic examines the full spectrum of haemodynamic monitoring in critical care—from the historical development of invasive monitoring techniques through to the latest non-invasive and AI-driven approaches. Contributions are invited on topics including the integration of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) and echocardiography for haemodynamic assessment and guidance, AI-enhanced imaging for cardiac monitoring, the management of acute kidney injury through haemodynamic threshold optimisation, and the role of non-invasive monitoring technologies in trauma and peri-arrest care. The collection also welcomes work on cardiogenic shock management, the haemodynamic implications of pulmonary hypertension in the ICU, haemoglobin-based oxygen carriers as resuscitation agents, and echocardiographic advances in right ventricular and valvular assessment. This Research Topic aims to deliver a comprehensive, evidence-informed guide to haemodynamic monitoring and cardiovascular management across the breadth of critical care practice.
