High- and Ultra-High-Frequency Ultrasound in Inflammatory and Allergic Skin Disease

High- and ultra-high-frequency ultrasound has emerged as a transformative non-invasive imaging modality in the evaluation of allergic and inflammatory skin diseases. While clinical examination remains the standard, it frequently encounters limitations in precisely characterizing subsurface features, grading disease severity, and tracking subtle responses to therapy. Recent advances—particularly within dermatology and radiology—point toward increasing use of skin ultrasound to complement existing diagnostic and management strategies. Studies now demonstrate that high- and ultra-high-frequency ultrasound can sensitively detect changes in skin thickness, edema, and vascularity associated with conditions such as atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, chronic pruritic disorders, and pediatric dermatoses. Yet, genuine integration of these tools into routine clinical care remains in its initial stages, with ongoing debates about standardization, reproducibility, and added clinical value. Further investigation is needed to delineate optimal imaging protocols, validate quantitative assessment metrics, and bridge imaging findings with histopathology and clinical outcomes. This Research Topic aims to advance understanding of the utility and integration of high- and ultra-high-frequency ultrasound in allergic and inflammatory skin diseases. Specifically, it seeks original research and comprehensive reviews focused on diagnostic accuracy, monitoring strategies, and interdisciplinary workflows. Key questions include how ultrasound refines disease characterization beyond visual inspection, how imaging correlates with clinicopathologic features and patient outcomes, and how these insights support precision care decisions across age groups, including children. By fostering contributions from both dermatology and radiology, this Research Topic intends to drive consensus, illustrate best practices, and identify future research priorities in this fast-evolving interdisciplinary domain.Work in this Research Topic will be limited to the role of high- and ultra-high-frequency ultrasound in allergic and immune-mediated inflammatory skin conditions, with a particular focus on practical application, validation, and the impact of skin imaging on patient management. Submissions may cover single or multiple disease entities, technological advances, and interdisciplinary approaches, excluding topics unrelated to allergy, inflammation, or skin-focused ultrasound. To gather further insights in this specialized area, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o High-frequency and ultra-high-frequency ultrasound in inflammatory dermatoseso Characteristic imaging features of allergic skin disorderso Ultrasound applications in pediatric dermatologyo Monitoring treatment response and disease activity by skin ultrasoundo Doppler ultrasound assessment of inflammatory activityo Clinicopathologic and imaging correlations, including quantitative metricso Implementation challenges, reproducibility, and integration into multidisciplinary careo Emerging applications of non-invasive imaging in allergy and dermatology Topic editors: Andrea Sechi, Corrado Tagliati, Laurent Misery, Jacek Cezary Szepietowski Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/79534/high--and-ultra-high-frequency-ultrasound-in-inflammatory-and-allergic-skin-disease
