High-Throughput Precision Biomanufacturing of High-Value, Low-Volume Specialty Biochemicals
The field of precision biomanufacturing is rapidly advancing as the global industry transitions from petroleum-based systems toward a sustainable, renewable bioeconomy. Demand for high-value, low-volume (HVLV) specialty biochemicals — such as recombinant biotherapeutics, high-purity antioxidants, cosmeceuticals, and advanced platform chemicals — continues to rise, driven by healthcare, environmental, and materials science sectors seeking tailored molecular solutions. Traditional synthesis and scale-up methods often fail to deliver the required precision, yield, and purity, pushing the frontiers of metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, and high-throughput (HTP) technologies. Recent breakthroughs include data-driven bioprocess optimization via AI and machine learning, waste valorization, and resource recovery from wastewater and solid biowaste streams. However, challenges remain in integrating circular bioeconomy strategies, closing energy loops, and translating laboratory successes to commercially viable operations. This Research Topic aims to showcase cutting-edge advances where precision biomanufacturing intersects with HTP methodologies, digital process control, and circular bioeconomy frameworks. The goal is to highlight how innovations such as automated continuous fermentation, AI-assisted metabolic design, and techno-economic evaluation can enable sustainable production of specialty biomolecules at industrial scale. By merging biotechnological innovation with digital and environmental intelligence, this Research Topic seeks to accelerate the adoption of smart, resource-efficient, and commercially viable production systems that underpin the next generation of the bioeconomy. To gather further insights within this multidisciplinary field, we welcome submissions that address, but are not limited to, the following themes:• Design, optimization, and application of HVLV products: biotherapeutics, enzymes, cosmeceuticals, pigments, and sustainable dyes;• Bioproducts as alternatives to petroleum resources: specialty acids, alcohols, biosurfactants, and phytochemicals;• Circular bioeconomy approaches, including upcycling plastics and valorizing agro-industrial residues into biopolymers;• Photosynthetic CO₂-to-fuel and bioelectrochemical production platforms using wild-type or engineered microbes;• Innovations in process design and downstream purification, including continuous or perfusion fermentation strategies for scale-up;• Industrial waste clarification, management, and resource recovery systems;• Integration of techno-economic assessment, AI, and machine learning for process optimization and commercial readiness. We invite Original Research, Reviews, Methods, and Perspectives that bridge discovery to deployment and illuminate a roadmap for specialty chemicals vital to a sustainable industrial future.
