Home-Based Exercise Interventions in Cancer Survivorship: Advancing Accessible and Sustainable Evidence-Based Supportive Care
Cancer survivorship is frequently accompanied by long-term physical, psychological, and social challenges, including cancer-related fatigue, reduced functional capacity, pain, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, and difficulties reintegrating into family, professional, and social life. With the growing global population of cancer survivors, there is an escalating need for supportive care strategies that are accessible, evidence-based, tailored to diverse patient needs, and sustainable beyond the clinical setting.Exercise and physical activity are widely recognized as central components of cancer prehabilitation, rehabilitation, and survivorship, with evidence demonstrating benefits for quality of life, physical function, fatigue management, and mental well-being. Yet, many individuals living with and beyond cancer encounter barriers to participating in facility-based programs, including time and travel constraints, financial cost, limited-service availability, work or caregiving responsibilities, and broader geographic or social inequities. Home-based exercise interventions provide a promising, patient-centered alternative to address these barriers, empowering survivors to safely and effectively engage in physical activity within their personal environments. This Research Topic aims to consolidate multidisciplinary research on the design, implementation, evaluation, and impact of home-based exercise interventions for individuals living with and beyond cancer. We welcome submissions including, but not limited to:• Clinical trials, quality improvement and evidence-based practice projects, implementation studies, theoretical contributions, clinical practice guidelines, literature reviews, and other relevant article types• Home-based exercise and physical activity programs for cancer survivors• Digital, remote, or telehealth-assisted exercise interventions• Exercise interventions targeting fatigue, pain, mobility, mental health, and quality of life• Rehabilitation and prehabilitation approaches delivered in home settings• Personalized exercise prescriptions for different types of cancer and survivorship stages• Barriers and facilitators to home-based exercise engagement• Equity, access, and inclusion in survivorship exercise programs• Family, caregiver, and community-supported rehabilitation models• Integration of exercise interventions into survivorship care plans• Long-term adherence, behavioral maintenance, and self-management strategies• Safety, feasibility, and implementation of home-based exercise interventions• Multidisciplinary approaches involving physiotherapy, occupational therapy, nursing, nutrition, and psychosocial careStudies examining supervised, unsupervised, or hybrid home-based exercise programs, digital and telehealth-supported strategies, behavior change frameworks, and personalized exercise pathways tailored to cancer type or treatment stage are particularly encouraged. This collection also promotes work that integrates evidence-based practice with innovative technologies, community engagement, and equity-focused perspectives in cancer support and care.Within the scope of the Multifaceted Approaches in Cancer Support section of Frontiers in Cancer Control and Society, this Research Topic welcomes contributions that advance holistic and multidisciplinary models of supportive cancer care. Emphasis will be placed on research that addresses the physical, psychological, emotional, and social dimensions of survivorship and contributes to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being.By highlighting innovative and practical approaches to home-based exercise in cancer survivorship, this Research Topic aims to foster more accessible, inclusive, and sustainable evidence-based models of supportive care that improve quality of life and long-term well-being for individuals living with and beyond cancer.
