Homogeneous Catalysis: Recent Developments and Future Perspectives

Today, catalysis plays a pivotal role in the production of fine chemicals, flavors, fragrances, agrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals. Homogeneous catalytic systems—including transition metal complexes, enzymes, and organocatalysts—have become essential for developing innovative synthetic methodologies. Numerous value-added products are manufactured industrially using homogeneous catalysis. The application of these catalysts not only enhances selectivity and enantiomeric excess but also improves tolerance to sensitive functional groups, enabling transformations that might otherwise be challenging. This Research Topic aims to present a comprehensive overview of the most recent advances in homogeneous catalysis. We seek original research and review articles exploring new directions and future opportunities in the design, synthesis, and characterization of well-defined catalysts and their precursors. Special emphasis will be given to mechanistic studies and the translation of catalytic methodologies to industrial applications. We encourage submissions that highlight metal complexes, enzymes, and organocatalysts, illustrating the diversity and evolving landscape of homogeneous catalytic processes. The collection will include balanced discussions of both widely applied industrial processes and innovative laboratory-scale reactions, setting the foundation for future advances. We welcome Original Research, Review, Mini Review and Perspective articles on themes including, but not limited to:-Synthesis and characterization of new inorganic, organometallic, and organocatalysts-Enzyme-catalyzed and organocatalytic homogeneous systems-Investigation of catalytic properties (including both novel and established catalysts)-Mechanistic and theoretical (computational) studies of homogeneous catalysis-Industrial applications and process-scale homogeneous catalysis-Development and application of chiral catalysts and asymmetric catalysis-Kinetic and spectroscopic analysis of catalytic processes-Transition-metal-catalyzed organic transformations-Green chemistry approaches and sustainability in homogeneous catalysis Topic editors: Athanassios I Philippopoulos, Thomas J.
