Honey Bee Health and Resilience: Confronting Threats and Advancing Sustainable Solutions
Honeybee colonies (Apis mellifera) face significant challenges that limit their survival and performance in pollination, honey production, and other hive products. This is due to the complex interaction of multiple factors, including parasitic, fungal, bacterial, and viral diseases, exposure to agrochemicals, scarcity of floral resources, and climate stress. To address these challenges, apicultural research must focus on developing sustainable strategies to preserve the health of these vital pollinators. In response to the health challenges faced by honey bees, this Research Topic aims to disseminate cutting-edge scientific knowledge. We seek to promote comprehensive and sustainable solutions to improve bee health and resilience globally. By compiling high-quality contributions, we intend to deepen our understanding of current threats and mitigation strategies. Ultimately, our purpose is to establish a solid scientific foundation that can inform policies, guide beekeeping practices, and foster research, thereby contributing to the long-term sustainability of bee populations and the ecosystems they support. This Research Topic aims to compile high-quality contributions that broaden our understanding of honey bee health and sustainability. We encourage the submission of original research articles and reviews. Submissions are invited on, but not limited to, the following themes:- The prevalence, distribution, and associated factors of bee diseases.- The evaluation of methods and products for disease control (e.g., Varroa destructor).- The analysis of colony loss rates and their associated factors.- The impact of feed additives and other strategies on the immune response and resilience of bees.We welcome diverse research approaches, from field studies and laboratory experiments to epidemiological analyses, all contributing to the overarching goal of safeguarding bee populations and global food security. We cordially invite researchers to submit their work to enrich our understanding of bee health and sustainability, thus contributing to the future of our ecosystems and global food security.
