Honoring the LGBT+ History Month: Advancing Health Equity, Public Health Education, and Community Resilience for LGBTQIA+ Populations

In observance of LGBT+ History Month, we reflect on the decades of activism, resilience, and struggle that have shaped the lives of LGBTQIA+ individuals worldwide. While history celebrates the milestones of liberation and legal recognition, public health data reminds us that the legacy of systemic exclusion continues to manifest in significant health disparities. This Research Topic aims to transcend the mere documentation of LGBTQIA+ vulnerability by advancing our understanding of the structural drivers that influence health, illuminating community strengths, and showcasing evidence-based interventions capable of fostering health equity. Specifically, this topic seeks to highlight how public health education (including health literacy for individuals, cultural humility training for providers, and advocacy for inclusive policy) can transform health trajectories across the lifespan. By bridging historical insights with modern public health imperatives, the goal is to chart new pathways for positive, sustainable change in LGBTQIA+ health and wellbeing. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Inclusive Public Health Education: Innovative approaches in public health education, provider training, and policy advocacy to reduce health disparities.• Health Promotion Interventions: Evidence for community-led programs, digital health interventions, and peer-support models tailored for LGBTQIA+ subgroups (including BIPOC, Transgender, and Non-binary individuals).• Gender Medicine and Gender Affirming Care Innovations: Understanding how sex characteristics, gender identity, hormonal treatments, and social determinants intersect to shape health trajectories.• Barriers to Healthcare Access: Investigating medical mistrust and the role of inclusive navigation services.• Intersectionality in Public Health: How the intersection of race, disability, socioeconomic status, and gender identity compounds health inequities and how education strategies can address these nuances.• Historical Trauma & Resilience: How the history of the LGBTQIA+ movement informs current health behaviors and the role of "community resilience" as a protective factor in public health. This Research Topic is a call to action for researchers, practitioners, and advocates to contribute evidence that does more than describe a problem: it must offer solutions. In the spirit of LGBT+ History Month, let us use this platform to ensure that the future of public health is one where everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can access equitable, high-quality healthcare, live free from the burden of systemic stigma, and see their unique identities reflected and respected in every facet of the public health landscape.
