Hormones and Immune Development: Bidirectional Regulation Between Thyroid Hormones and the Immune System
The field of endocrine-immunology investigates how hormonal networks intricately interact with and regulate the immune system across a spectrum of physiological and pathological settings. Increasing evidence demonstrates that hormones exert critical and diverse effects on T cell populations, especially within non-reproductive tissues and across distinct physiological states. Landmark findings from experimental autoimmune models indicate that certain hormones and their receptors, particularly those involved in pro-inflammatory signaling, amplify disease processes by modulating immune cell activity. However, a significant gap remains regarding the function of other endocrine factors—such as thyroid hormone receptors—whose impact on immune responses, especially in dynamic contexts like reproduction, are yet to be fully delineated. This Research Topic aims to elucidate the complex interactions between endocrine signals and genetic determinants that orchestrate T cell-mediated immunity, particularly during gestation and lactation. The primary objective is to understand how changes in the endocrine environment—whether due to physiological transitions like pregnancy and lactation or exposure to endocrine disruptors—shape the activities and fate of T cells. In doing so, the topic seeks to clarify the molecular and cellular pathways by which endocrine factors contribute to the pathogenesis or protection against autoimmune conditions, opening avenues for new diagnostics or interventions.Focusing primarily on the effects of diverse endocrine modulators on T and B lymphocyte function during health and reproductive milestones, this Research Topic addresses both normal physiology and disease susceptibility. To gather further insights into these mechanisms and their broader implications, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Immune responses and changes during gestation and lactation• Hormones and Immune Development: From Thymus to DCs and B/T Cells• Bidirectional Regulation Between Thyroid Hormones and the Immune System• Prolactin, thyroid hormones and corticoids on T and B cell biology and ontology• Endocrine-immune interplay: impacts on autoimmunity and reproductive immunology• Crosstalk between thyroid hormones and immune effectors in reproductive contexts• Genetic and epigenetic regulation of immune cells by endocrine factors• Contributions of endocrine disruptors to autoimmune risk and immune toleranceIf relevant, a variety of article types are encouraged, including original research, reviews, perspectives, and methodological papers, with an strong focus on immunology.
