Host–Virus Interactions and Innate/Adaptive Immune Responses in Bovine Viral Diseases

Viral diseases remain among the most significant threats to cattle health, productivity, and food security worldwide, causing substantial economic losses in dairy and beef production systems and, for zoonotic agents, posing risks to public health. Bovine populations are affected by a wide range of DNA and RNA viruses, such as bovine viral diarrhea virus, bovine herpesvirus, and bovine respiratory syncytial virus, whose emergence and re-emergence are driven by intensified production systems, global trade, and environmental change. The host immune system is central to determining infection outcome, viral clearance, persistence, and transmission, yet the innate sensing pathways, cytokine networks, and adaptive T- and B-cell responses elicited by many bovine viral pathogens remain incompletely characterized compared with their human medicine counterparts. Closing this knowledge gap is essential for designing more effective vaccines, diagnostics, and control strategies. This Research Topic aims to advance understanding of how cattle recognize, respond to, and are shaped by viral infection, from molecular sensing to whole-organism outcomes. We seek contributions on innate immune sensing, adaptive immunity (T-cell and antibody responses, immunological memory), and virus-driven immune evasion across economically important bovine viruses. Recent advances in multi-omics, single-cell technologies, and immunoinformatics now allow these host-pathogen interactions to be dissected with unprecedented resolution, revealing correlates of protection and novel biomarkers. This Topic aims to translate mechanistic insight into improved vaccine design, diagnostics, and control strategies for bovine viral diseases, with relevance to One Health and zoonotic spillover risk. We welcome the submission of Original Research, Review, Mini Review, and Perspective articles on themes including, but not limited to:• Innate immune sensing and interferon responses to bovine viruses• T-cell and humoral adaptive immune responses to viral infection in cattle• Viral immune evasion and immunomodulation strategies• Immunopathogenesis of emerging and re-emerging bovine viral diseases• Multi-omics and systems immunology approaches to host-virus interactions• Immune correlates of protection and biomarkers for vaccine and diagnostic developmentManuscripts focusing on dairy and beef cattle, as well as comparative and translational studies involving other ruminant or livestock species, are particularly encouraged.
