Human-Centric IoT for Inclusive Society: Advancing Autonomy in Aging, Disability, and Special Needs Support
As the global demographic shifts toward an aging population, the "Internet of Medical Things" (IoMT) must evolve from reactive data collection to proactive, human-centric support. This Research Topic focuses on the societal impact and technological deployment of IoT solutions designed specifically for elderly individuals and people with disabilities. The goal is to move beyond "surveillance-style" monitoring and instead foster Digital Dignity. We seek research that explores how ambient intelligence, wearable haptics, and social IoT can enhance quality of life, reduce caregiver burden, and ensure that "Smart Cities" are truly accessible to all citizens, regardless of physical or cognitive ability. We invite submissions that address the intersection of technology and society, including but not limited to:● Ambient Assisted Living (AAL): Next-generation smart home architectures that use non-intrusive sensors (e.g., radar, LIDAR) to detect falls or distress without compromising visual privacy.● IoT for Cognitive Support: Assistive IoT services for individuals with neurodivergent conditions or dementia (e.g., smart memory prompts and wayfinding).● The Ethics of IoT Surveillance: Research on the "Privacy-Autonomy Trade-off" in long-term care facilities and home-based IoT monitoring.● Inclusive Smart Urbanism: IoT-enabled services that improve city navigation for the visually or mobility-impaired (e.g., real-time haptic feedback from smart street furniture).● Co-Design Methodologies: Societal studies on involving elderly users in the development phase of IoT products to prevent "tech-aversion."
