Humoral responses to Toxoplasma gondii across host species: prevalence, epidemiology, diagnostics
Toxoplasma gondii is a globally distributed zoonotic parasite that infects a wide range of warm-blooded hosts, including domestic animals, wildlife, birds, and humans. As a foodborne and environmentally transmitted pathogen of major public health and veterinary relevance, T. gondii is well suited to investigation within a One Health framework. Serological evidence of exposure remains central to understanding transmission patterns, estimating burden across host species, and identifying populations or environments at increased risk. This Research Topic is specifically focused on humoral immune responses to Toxoplasma gondii and on the serological assessment of exposure, infection dynamics, and population-level patterns across host species. In contrast to broader topics on farm-animal immunology or general One Health immunology, this collection is intended to be pathogen-specific and serology-centered, with emphasis on antibody-mediated responses, prevalence studies, seroepidemiology, and the development, comparison, and evaluation of diagnostic assays. We welcome contributions addressing T. gondii-specific antibody responses in domestic and wild mammals, birds, and humans, including studies that improve understanding of host exposure, infection patterns, and the epidemiological significance of sentinel species. Manuscripts examining the performance and applicability of serological tools in different host systems are particularly encouraged, including comparisons between in-house and commercial methods and studies evaluating diagnostic accuracy, interpretation, and field utility.Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:Humoral responses to T. gondii across host speciesT. gondii-specific antibodies, including IgG, IgM, IgA, and IgESeroprevalence and seroepidemiology in domestic animals, wildlife, birds, and humansSentinel host species as indicators of environmental exposure to T. gondii oocystsAntigenic targets relevant to serological responses, including ROPs, GRAs, and SAGsDevelopment, standardization, and evaluation of serological and antibody-based diagnostic methodsComparative assessment of commercial and in-house assays, including ELISA, MAT, IFAT, LAT, and related approachesDiagnostic interpretation in cross-species settings and implications for surveillance and One Health epidemiologyWe welcome the submission of Original Research, Review, Mini Review, and Perspective articles.
