Hydro-Climatic Variability: Impacts and Adaptation Pathways for Water Management and Agriculture
This research topic focuses on how climatic variability at global and regional scales cascades to impact local hydrological regimes, agricultural productivity, and water availability. It aims to bridge the gap between climate science and applied water management by integrating remote sensing observations, climatic data analysis, hydrological modelling, geophysical surveys, and land use/ land cover (LULC) change assessment. In other words, this research topic explores how hydroclimatic variability, from inter-annual shifts to extreme events, can reshape local hydrology, water availability, and crop productivity. We invite studies that close the gap between climate diagnostics and applied water management, spanning scales from global teleconnections to field-level interventions.Contributions may integrate (but are not limited to):● Satellite and UAV remote sensing of soil moisture (SM), evapotranspiration, snow, and ice● In-situ hydro-meteorological observations and reanalysis products● Hydrological and agro-hydrological modelling (process-based or data-driven)● Geophysical and isotopic methods for groundwater and SM root-zone dynamics● Land-cover/land-use change analysis and scenario modelling● Machine-learning, data assimilation, and hydro-informatics approaches.Contributions to this Research Topic can be made in the form of Original Research articles, Review articles, and Opinion pieces.
