Identification of Novel Molecular Targets of Disease Progression and Pharmacological Effects
The field of molecular biosciences has entered a new era driven by high-dimensional omics technologies. Genomics, proteomics, single-cell RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomics now provide unparalleled insights into molecular alterations in disease processes and therapeutic responses. These approaches allow researchers to monitor gene expression at cellular resolution and capture spatially structured molecular information in tissues, unveiling cell heterogeneity and molecular interactions within complex biological systems. Despite significant advances, a major challenge remains: the translation of omics data into clinically actionable targets is still limited, and robust frameworks for integrating multi-omics outputs are urgently needed. This Research Topic aims to advance the identification of molecular targets underpinning disease progression and pharmacological effects. It seeks contributions that use multi-omics platforms to uncover disease-associated regulatory networks, signaling pathways, and molecular responses to drugs. Studies addressing differences between normal and pathological samples, or before and after drug intervention, are particularly encouraged. The goal is to accelerate the discovery and validation of pivotal genes, proteins, and molecular signatures that could serve as biomarkers or therapeutic entry points across a wide spectrum of diseases. To gather further insights into disease-specific and drug-induced molecular alterations, we welcome contributions that apply integrative or comparative omics technologies. Submission topics may include, but are not limited to:• Omics-based identification of key molecules associated with disease progression or treatment response• Comparative genomics and proteomics for differential target screening• Single-cell transcriptomic analyses revealing cellular heterogeneity and novel regulatory targets• Spatial transcriptomics identifies the differentially expressed molecules with precise positional information in tissues.• Functional validation and preclinical evaluation of identified targets• Multi-omics data integration for predicting therapeutic efficacyAppendix: We welcome Original Research, Review, Mini Review, Clinical Trial, Short Communication, FAIR² Data, and Data Report articles. Submissions based primarily on computational analyses must include appropriate validation using independent datasets or experimental approaches. Purely descriptive studies, unvalidated predictions, or works lacking mechanistic insight are outside the scope.
