Image-Guided Embolization and Ablation: Technology, Techniques, and Clinical Applications
Since Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen’s discovery of X-rays in 1895, medical imaging has revolutionized the diagnosis and management of disease. Over the past century, continuous advances in imaging technologies, including ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, fluoroscopy, cone-beam CT, and hybrid imaging, have transformed modern medicine. More recently, imaging has evolved beyond its traditional diagnostic role to become the foundation of minimally invasive, image-guided interventions.Among these interventions, embolization and percutaneous ablation have emerged as cornerstone therapies. Image guidance enables precise, targeted treatment while reducing procedural morbidity across a wide clinical spectrum. In neurovascular disease, image-guided techniques have revolutionized the management of acute ischemic stroke, intracranial aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, and other cerebrovascular disorders through increasingly sophisticated endovascular approaches. In interventional oncology, image guidance has transformed the care of patients with cancer, supporting the entire treatment pathway from image-guided biopsy and diagnosis to locoregional therapies, including thermal ablation, embolization, radioembolization, and other catheter-based and percutaneous interventions.Rapid technological advances, including novel devices, robotics, artificial intelligence, advanced navigation systems, fusion imaging, and new embolic and ablative technologies, continue to expand the indications, safety, and effectiveness of these procedures. As these innovations reshape clinical practice, high-quality evidence is essential to evaluate procedural techniques, clinical outcomes, and future directions. This Research Topic aims to highlight recent advances in image-guided embolization and ablation, connecting developments in interventional neuroradiology with the broader field of interventional radiology and demonstrating how shared technology and navigation strategies translate across anatomical fields. We welcome studies addressing procedural innovation, clinical outcomes, technical developments, novel devices, image-guidance technologies, and emerging therapeutic strategies across the following areas of interest:- Neurovascular embolization: endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke, intracranial aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, and other cerebrovascular disorders.- Spine interventions: spinal tumor embolization, ablation, and vertebral augmentation.- Oncologic embolization: transarterial chemoembolization, radioembolization, and other locoregional therapies.- Hemorrhage control: transcatheter embolization for acute and traumatic bleeding.- Venous embolization: treatment of venous disorders and vascular malformations.- Thermal ablation: radiofrequency and microwave ablation across neurological and oncologic indications.- Cryoablation: cryotherapy for tumor and soft tissue targets.- Robotics: robotic-assisted navigation and delivery in image-guided intervention.- Artificial intelligence: AI applications in procedural planning, dosimetry, and image guidance. We invite clinicians, engineers, and researchers to submit original research, clinical trials, and technical notes. This collection brings together breakthroughs in both neuroradiology and general interventional radiology. Our goal is to build a strong body of evidence to guide future patient care and tool development. We welcome your latest findings and look forward to your contributions to this collaborative forum.
