Immunity, Atherosclerosis and Cardiovascular Disease: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Cardiometabolic Health - Volume II

This is a Research Topic initiated by NAVBO, the North American Vascular Biology Organization. Our goal is to identify the next frontiers in atherosclerosis research and to drive the development of innovative clinical approaches.Following the impactful contributions and scientific engagement of our first volume (Immunity, Atherosclerosis and Cardiovascular Disease: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Cardiometabolic Health), we are pleased to announce the launch of Volume II.Atherosclerosis is now recognized as a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disease of the arterial wall. Both innate and adaptive immune responses contribute to plaque formation, progression, and instability, linking immune dysregulation to cardiovascular events. Despite advances in lipid management, the immune mechanisms driving atherosclerosis are not fully understood. Recent studies reveal complex interactions among immune cells, endothelial dysfunction, and metabolic signaling, but knowledge gaps remain regarding how these pathways lead to vascular injury and how they can be therapeutically targeted. This Research Topic aims to deepen understanding of inflammation and immune regulation in atherosclerotic vascular disease. It seeks to uncover key molecular and cellular mechanisms, identify novel therapeutic targets, and promote translational approaches that connect immunology and cardiology. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, the goal is to drive innovative strategies that improve outcomes in cardiovascular health. To gather further insights into immune-mediated mechanisms driving atherosclerosis, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Role of immune cells and their interactions in atherosclerosis progressiono Inflammation-driven endothelial dysfunction and its contribution to vascular diseaseo Molecular mechanisms underlying immune responses in atherosclerosiso Immunotherapy and anti-inflammatory strategies for cardiovascular protectiono Crosstalk between innate and adaptive immunity in vascular pathologyo Heterogeneity of immune cells in atherosclerotic lesionso Mechanisms of inflammation resolution in vascular diseaseo Novel signaling and post-translational modification pathwayso Accelerated inflammation in metabolic disorderso Dysregulation of immunity in agingo Roles of lipids and metabolic factors in vascular inflammationo Advanced omics, systems biology, and machine learning approaches in atherosclerosis researcho Drug discovery and translation of molecular insights into precision medicine**J.B. is a co-inventor of patents covering anti-MIF strategies for inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases. He also is a co-inventor of a patent application covering MIF-binding CXCR4 ectodomain mimics for inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases.
