Immunometabolism and Transplantation: Metabolic Regulation of Immune Responses in Kidney Transplant Recipients

Immunometabolism, the intersection of cellular metabolism and immune regulation, has emerged as a key determinant of transplant outcomes. Metabolic pathways govern immune cell activation, differentiation, and effector functions, thereby shaping the immune microenvironment in kidney transplant recipients. Dysregulated metabolism can exacerbate inflammatory responses, promote graft rejection, or impair the development of tolerance. Furthermore, immunosuppressive therapies often alter metabolic homeostasis, adding complexity to post-transplant immune regulation. Understanding how metabolic reprogramming influences immune responses is essential for advancing transplant medicine and identifying novel therapeutic strategies. This Research Topic aims to explore how metabolic pathways and metabolites regulate immune cell function in kidney transplantation. We seek to highlight the interplay between energy metabolism and immune responses, and how metabolic modulation may impact graft survival. In particular, we encourage studies on metabolic reprogramming of T cells, macrophages, and other immune subsets in the transplant setting, as well as investigations into metabolic biomarkers that predict rejection or tolerance. By gathering insights into immuno-metabolic regulation, this collection will provide a foundation for innovative therapies designed to improve long-term transplant outcomes. We welcome contributions that address the broad spectrum of immunometabolism in transplantation, including but not limited to: the role of glycolysis, oxidative phosphorylation, and lipid metabolism in immune regulation post-transplant; metabolite-mediated signaling pathways shaping immune tolerance and rejection; impact of immunosuppressants on immune cell metabolism; therapeutic interventions targeting metabolic pathways to enhance graft survival; clinical and translational studies identifying metabolic biomarkers of transplant outcomes. We welcome original research articles, reviews, and perspective pieces that contribute to this evolving field. We particularly encourage interdisciplinary studies integrating immunology, metabolism, and clinical transplantation.
