Impact of Plant Bioactive Compounds on Human Nutrition and Health, Volume II
Plant bioactive compounds, including polyphenols, flavonoids, terpenes and alkaloids, are widely studied for their pro-health potential and their role in chronic disease prevention. These naturally occurring compounds, found in fruits, vegetables and herbs, show a wide range of biological activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, cardioprotective and neuroprotective effects. Research has increasingly highlighted their influence on metabolic pathways, gut microbiota composition and immune function, linking regular consumption to a reduced risk of conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and certain cancers. As interest in functional foods and nutraceuticals grows, understanding the bioavailability, mechanisms of action and long term effects of these compounds becomes essential. This second volume continues to explore the latest advances in the study of plant bioactives and their implications for human nutrition and health, bridging food science, clinical research and public health. Synergistic and antagonistic effects between bioactives are also of interest, particularly when they are combined in new food products. These interactions may be particularly relevant to chronic diseases, which involve multiple biological pathways and may require multifaceted prevention strategies. This volume welcomes studies that clarify mechanisms of action and also explore novel delivery systems, dietary patterns and population specific recommendations, helping translate scientific knowledge into practical dietary strategies and health policy. It builds on the success of the first volume, Impact of Plant Bioactive Compounds on Human Nutrition and Health, and welcomes both new contributors and returning authors. The collection is focused, but not limited, on:• Biological activities of plant bioactive compounds• Bioavailability and bioaccessibility of plant bioactive compounds• Influence of plant bioactive compounds on chronic diseases• From field to plate. How cultivar, farming system and growing conditions shape the bioactive content of the raw material in the first place. • Stability from harvest to consumption. Extraction methods, encapsulation, fermentation and processing, and how much of the bioactive content actually survives to reach the consumer.
