Implantable and Wearable Biosensors for Real-Time Neurochemical and Molecular Monitoring

Real-time, continuous monitoring of neurochemical and molecular signals is transforming how we study brain function, diagnose neurological and psychiatric disorders, and track therapeutic response. Implantable and wearable biosensors offer a powerful means to capture this information directly from the body, moving beyond static, single-timepoint measurements toward dynamic, longitudinal insight into physiology and disease. This Research Topic welcomes original research, reviews, and perspectives on the design, fabrication, and application of biosensing platforms for real-time detection of neurotransmitters, metabolites, drugs, and other molecular targets in vivo or on the body. We are particularly interested in advances that improve sensor selectivity, sensitivity, biocompatibility, and long-term stability — key barriers to translating laboratory biosensors into reliable clinical and research tools.Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:- Implantable electrochemical and electrophysiological biosensors for neurotransmitter and metabolite detection- Flexible and soft microelectrode arrays for chronic in vivo sensing- Aptamer-, enzyme-, and antibody-functionalized biosensors for target-specific molecular detection- Conducting polymer and nanomaterial coatings for improved biosensor performance and biocompatibility- Wearable biosensors for non-invasive or minimally invasive molecular and biochemical monitoring- Strategies to mitigate foreign body response and improve long-term sensor stability in implantable devices- Multiplexed and multimodal sensing platforms combining electrophysiology, neurochemistry, and other biosignals- Point-of-care and translational applications of real-time biosensing for neurological, psychiatric, and metabolic conditions- Data processing, calibration, and signal-analysis approaches supporting continuous biosensor readoutsBy bringing together researchers working across materials science, bioelectronics, neuroscience, and clinical translation, this Research Topic aims to advance the development of next-generation biosensing technologies that enable earlier diagnosis, better disease monitoring, and more effective, personalized treatment strategies.
