Implementing Advanced Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologies to Improve Long-Term Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Outcomes and Promoting Living Kidney Donation
Pancreas and kidney transplantation improve the survival and quality of life of patients with insulin and kidney failure. While good short-term allograft outcome is generally achieved, long-term graft outcomes are not optimal and are limited by several factors, including immunological and non-immunological factors. Advances in diagnostic and therapeutic technologies have evolved to improve transplant outcomes, particularly long-term outcomes; however, implementing those strategies has faced challenges from barriers involving patient, provider, community, healthcare system, and policy factors. Identifying barriers and strategies to facilitate and enable the implementation of advanced diagnostic and therapeutic technologies should be among the methods that improve long-term transplant outcomes.Despite those advanced technologies, living kidney donation currently remains the best available treatment for patients with advanced chronic kidney disease or end-stage kidney disease in terms of the short- and long-term transplant and patient outcomes, and one of the important strategies to mitigate the deceased donor organ shortage. However, several factors remain barriers to implementing successful living kidney donation in several countries. While promoting living kidney donation primarily involves in the interplay between potential donors and recipients, it is also influenced by law, societal, and ethical considerations, particularly advanced strategies for utilizing living kidney donor organs such as living unrelated kidney donation, kidney paired donation and advanced kidney donation. This topic will gather evidence of those technologies and implementation strategies that assist transplant providers in translating the evidence to real-world clinical practice to achieve implementation success and successfully maximize long-term transplant outcomes, as well as improve acceptability of and promote appropriateness for living kidney donation sustainably.
