Improving Vision-Guided Robotic Systems Through Next-Generation Hand-Eye Calibration Techniques
Robotic vision systems form the foundation of modern industrial automation, enabling high-precision tasks such as assembly, inspection, and object manipulation. Central to their performance is hand-eye calibration, which defines the spatial relationship between the robotic manipulator and the visual sensor. Traditional calibration methods typically rely on multiple feature points, complex mathematical transformations, and iterative optimizations, increasing the risk of cumulative errors and computational inefficiencies. Recent approaches leveraging simplified configurations—such as single fixed feature point methods and algorithms like Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) and Levenberg-Marquardt (LM)—have shown promise in reducing setup complexity. However, persistent issues with accuracy, robustness to sensor noise, and adaptability to dynamic environments highlight the need for innovative solutions that balance precision with operational efficiency. This Research Topic aims to develop and evaluate next-generation hand-eye calibration frameworks that significantly improve the performance and reliability of vision-guided robotic systems. Specifically, it seeks to explore methodologies that enhance calibration accuracy, improve robustness against environmental disturbances, and reduce processing time. By integrating advanced computational techniques, adaptive modeling, and data-driven approaches, researchers can refine the calibration process for both stationary and mobile robotic systems. The overall goal is to establish a foundation for standardized, efficient, and scalable calibration protocols that strengthen automation capabilities across diverse industrial applications. To gather further insights into the optimization and practical deployment of advanced robotic calibration strategies, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:Development of novel algorithms for precise and robust hand-eye calibrationComparative studies on traditional vs. data-driven calibration methodsMachine learning and optimization techniques for real-time adjustment and error correctionIntegration of calibration frameworks with multi-sensor and multimodal robotic systemsExperimental evaluations of calibration accuracy under varying industrial conditionsImplementation challenges and benchmarking for flexible manufacturing environments Topic editors: Li Zhang, Chee Peng Lim, Haoqian Huang Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/81023/improving-vision-guided-robotic-systems-through-next-generation-hand-eye-calibration-techniques
