Inclusion and Human Development: Psychosocial and Educational Perspectives

Developmental psychology investigates how people evolve cognitively, emotionally, and socially across their lifespans, increasingly emphasizing the significance of psychosocial and educational inclusion. In modern, diverse societies, scholars and practitioners continue to explore how inclusive environments influence human development for individuals of different ages and backgrounds. Current debates center on the relationship between inclusion, identity formation, emotional well-being, and learning trajectories, highlighting how these processes intersect to shape developmental outcomes. Contemporary research in psychology, neuroscience, and education demonstrates that inclusive approaches, from pedagogical strategies to broader community initiatives, can nurture empathy, resilience, and social cohesion, particularly among groups experiencing marginalization. However, notable gaps persist in understanding the underlying mechanisms that link inclusion to developmental change, the contextual factors that shape these effects, and how inclusive practices can be effectively adapted across cultural settings, life stages, and social systems. This Research Topic aims to examine how psychosocial and educational inclusion influence human development throughout the lifespan. It seeks to identify mechanisms and strategies that best promote cognitive, emotional, and social growth within inclusive contexts, assess the outcomes of these practices across developmental transitions, and explore intersections between policy, education, and community interventions. By integrating psychological, neuroscientific, educational, and policy-based perspectives, the Research Topic will advance understanding of dynamic and context-specific pathways through which inclusion fosters human flourishing, with a particular focus on populations that experience exclusion or vulnerability. Key questions include how inclusive environments shape identity development, emotion regulation, and learning, and which innovative approaches or frameworks can enhance inclusion across diverse developmental contexts. This Research Topic encompasses empirical, theoretical, and methodological work exploring inclusion as it relates to human development from childhood through adulthood. To gather further insights into how inclusive experiences support psychosocial and educational trajectories, we welcome contributions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Mechanisms of learning and adaptation in inclusive educational settings• Socio-emotional development in the context of psychosocial support• Effects of inclusive education policies on developmental outcomes• Support systems and interventions for vulnerable and marginalized groups• Cross-cultural and comparative approaches to inclusion and human development• Neuroscientific insights into the impact of inclusive environments• Interactions between families, schools, and communities in fostering inclusion Topic editors: Katerina Asonitou, Dimitra Koutsouki Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/76082/inclusion-and-human-development-psychosocial-and-educational-perspectives
