Incretin - Based Therapies in Type 2 Diabetes: Insulin Secretion, Sensitivity, and Beta-Cell Function

Type 2 diabetes is characterized by progressive pancreatic beta-cell dysfunction, impaired insulin secretion, and reduced insulin sensitivity. Incretin hormones, particularly glucagon - like peptide-1 (GLP - 1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), play an important role in regulating glucose-dependent insulin secretion and maintaining glucose homeostasis. However, incretin action is often impaired in type 2 diabetes, contributing to the deterioration of beta-cell function and glycaemic control. The development of GLP-1 receptor agonists and dual incretin receptor agonists has expanded the therapeutic options available for type 2 diabetes. In addition to enhancing glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, these agents may support the preservation of beta-cell function and influence inflammation and oxidative stress. Nevertheless, important questions remain regarding their mechanisms of action, variability in treatment response, impaired incretin signalling, and their use alongside insulin-based therapies.A better understanding of the incretin-beta-cell-insulin axis may support the development of more targeted therapeutic strategies and improve the long-term management of type 2 diabetes. This Research Topic welcomes submissions addressing themes including, but not limited to:• GLP-1 and GIP signalling in type 2 diabetes• GLP-1 receptor agonists and dual incretin receptor agonists• Incretin regulation of glucose-stimulated insulin secretion• Molecular mechanisms of incretin action in pancreatic beta cells• Beta-cell dysfunction and impaired incretin responses in type 2 diabetes• Incretin-based therapies and the preservation of beta-cell function• Incretin resistance and altered incretin hormone action• Metabolic inflammation and oxidative stress affecting beta-cell and insulin function• Combination approaches involving incretin-based therapies and insulin treatment• Biomarkers associated with beta-cell responses to incretin-based therapies• Emerging therapeutic targets within the incretin–beta-cell-insulin axis Topic editors: Lixin Li, Xiaodong Sun Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/85500/incretin---based-therapies-in-type-2-diabetes-insulin-secretion-sensitivity-and-beta-cell-function
