Induced Resistance: Integrative Approaches and Mechanistic Insights
Induced resistance is a long-standing and well-established approach for controlling plant biotic stress in an environmentally friendly manner. Rather than relying on direct pesticidal action, induced resistance primes or activates the plant’s own defense machinery, offering a durable and sustainable alternative to conventional crop protection. Recent evidence, however, shows that its relevance extends well beyond disease control: induced resistance pathways also intersect with growth regulation, developmental signaling, and tolerance to non-biotic challenges, positioning this field at the crossroads of plant defense, physiology, and stress biology.Advances in cell biology and plant development continue to uncover new and unexpected roles for induced resistance in modulating fundamental aspects of plant biology — from hormone crosstalk and epigenetic regulation to systemic signaling and priming memory. At the same time, the diversity of known and candidate inducers, ranging from microbial elicitors and beneficial microbes to chemical and physical agents, keeps expanding, as does the range of stressors these approaches can address. This Research Topic aims to broaden the conversation around induced resistance by bringing together mechanistic and applied studies that go beyond the classical fungal/bacterial/viral disease framework. We welcome contributions addressing induced resistance against arthropod pests and other biotic stressors, as well as its emerging roles in abiotic stress tolerance and plant growth promotion. Studies unraveling the mode of action of specific inducers, the signaling pathways and regulatory nodes underlying induced resistance, and its broader physiological consequences beyond protection are equally encouraged. We invite Original Research, Reviews, Mini Reviews, and Perspective articles covering, but not limited to, the following themes:- Novel inducers of resistance (microbial, chemical, physical) and their modes of action- Molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying induced resistance (signaling pathways, hormone crosstalk, epigenetic regulation, priming and memory)- Induced resistance against fungal, bacterial, viral, and oomycete pathogens- Induced resistance against arthropod pests and other biotic stressors- Cross-talk between induced resistance and abiotic stress tolerance- Roles of induced resistance in plant growth promotion and developmental regulation- Systemic and long-distance signaling in induced resistance responses- Beneficial microbes and microbiome-mediated induced resistance- Translational and field-level applications of induced resistance strategies in crop protection- Integrative and multi-omics approaches to dissecting induced resistance networks Topic editors: Yigal Elad, Ziv Spiegelman, Maya Bar, Lorena Pizarro Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/84941/induced-resistance-integrative-approaches-and-mechanistic-insights
