Infection-Driven Inflammation and Disease: Molecular Mechanisms, Multi-Omics Discovery, and Translational Therapeutic Strategies
The field of infection-associated inflammation lies at the intersection of microbiology, immunology, and translational medicine. Microbial pathogens and their products trigger host inflammatory cascades, contributing not only to acute infectious diseases but also to long-term sequelae across metabolic, neurological, and oncogenic disease spectra. Despite significant progress in our understanding of pathogen-host interactions, major questions persist regarding the molecular circuits linking infection to tissue pathology, the specific contributions of microbial versus host factors, and the optimal strategies for therapeutic intervention. Recent studies have highlighted the global health impact of infection-driven chronic disease, with organizations such as the WHO reporting substantial proportions of malignancy and organ dysfunction attributable to infectious insults. The emergence of multi-omics technologies, computational modeling, and innovative therapeutic modalities has further energized the field. However, a cohesive framework integrating molecular, systems, and clinical insights remains elusive, and there is a need for more comprehensive exploration of both pathogen-directed and host-targeted interventions within this context. This Research Topic aims to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying infection-driven inflammation and the subsequent transition to disease, taking advantage of cutting-edge methodologies that span basic discovery through translational application. By focusing on the interplay between pathogen-derived factors and host immune responses, this Topic seeks to illuminate how infections drive acute and chronic disease processes and to highlight promising therapeutic strategies. Studies addressing key questions such as how infections reshape cellular metabolism, structure, signaling, and systemic homeostasis are particularly encouraged. The goal is to provide an integrated, multidisciplinary platform for researchers to share novel findings and methodological advances, thereby accelerating our understanding of both the mechanisms and treatment of infection-associated inflammatory diseases. This Research Topic will focus on the interface of infection, inflammation, and disease, accepting research that bridges mechanistic insights and translational approaches. Submissions should emphasize molecular, cellular, or systemic consequences of infection-related inflammation and their implications for therapy or disease outcomes.
