Influence of Ageing on the Anterior Segment Structures of the Eye
The anterior segment of the eye undergoes significant anatomical and physiological changes with age. Structures such as the cornea, anterior chamber, iris, and lens exhibit variations that can impact visual function and increase susceptibility to ocular diseases. Ageing is associated with lens thickening, reduced anterior chamber depth, and changes in corneal curvature and endothelial cell density—factors that influence intraocular pressure dynamics and contribute to the development of conditions such as angle-closure glaucoma and cataracts, as well as affect refractive status and accommodation. Understanding these age-related changes is critical for improving diagnostic accuracy, tailoring surgical interventions, and optimising clinical outcomes in ophthalmic care.Despite the relevance of these changes, especially as life expectancy increases, the full spectrum of anatomical and physiological alterations—and their clinical implications—remains underexplored. The variability of age-related changes among individuals further complicates risk assessment and management. Advances in high-resolution imaging technologies, including anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT), Scheimpflug imaging, and ultrasound biomicroscopy, have enabled more precise evaluation of the anterior segment structures. Recent studies have quantified changes in anterior chamber depth, lens thickness, and corneal endothelial density across age groups, offering new insights into ocular ageing. This research aims to systematically analyse the relationship between ageing and the morphological parameters of the anterior segment, identifying patterns that can guide clinical decision-making and personalised management. By integrating biometric and imaging data, we seek to contribute to a comprehensive understanding of ocular ageing and its implications for eye health. This Research Topic invites original research and reviews on age-related anatomical and physiological changes in the anterior segment of the eye, including their clinical consequences.
