Innovation in Fluorescent Probe design for Cell Analysis

The field of fluorescent probe development has rapidly transformed biosensing and cell imaging, empowering researchers to visualize and interrogate the intricate architecture and functions within living cells. Significant progress has been achieved through the creation of a wide variety of molecular probes that specifically target diverse cellular components such as cytoskeletal proteins, mitochondria, lysosomes, and the cell nucleus, as well as physiological parameters like metal ions, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and local pH. While fluorescent probes have substantially enhanced our capacity to detect and monitor biologically relevant but intrinsically non-fluorescent cellular species, persistent challenges remain. Notably, demands are rising for probes with higher quantum yields, superior selectivity and sensitivity, robust biocompatibility, near-infrared emission profiles suitable for deep-tissue and live imaging, user-friendliness, and optimization for super-resolution microscopy. Recent efforts have also introduced novel chemical classes—ranging from small molecule dyes and fluorescent antibodies to innovative fluorescent nanomaterials, such as quantum dots and metal nanoclusters—yet the field continues to face limitations related to probe performance and applicability across emerging imaging modalities. This Research Topic aims to advance the understanding and application of cutting-edge fluorescent probes in biosensing and cellular imaging. We seek to elucidate novel strategies for designing and optimizing probes with enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, and resolution. Key objectives include dissecting the structure–activity relationships that drive improved imaging performance, addressing the practical barriers to probe biocompatibility and in-vivo usability, and exploring their potential for precisely targeting and visualizing subcellular structures and dynamic biochemical events. Furthermore, this Research Topic encourages contributions that evaluate the translational potential of new fluorescent materials, and that expand the toolbox available for both fundamental and applied biological imaging. The scope of this Research Topic is limited to recent developments in fluorescent probe chemistry, biosensing mechanisms, and innovations in cell imaging, particularly emphasizing super-resolution and advanced microscopy applications. Both experimental research and theoretical advances are welcome. We encourage submissions on, but not limited to, the following themes:o Rational design and synthesis of novel fluorescent probeso Probes for detecting intracellular ions and small biomoleculeso Fluorescent nanomaterials for high-resolution and deep-tissue imagingo Strategies to enhance probe selectivity, sensitivity, and biocompatibilityo Integrative imaging platforms using next-generation fluorescent probeso Applications in biomarker imaging, diagnostics, and live-cell visualizationo Comparative performance analysis of different probe categories Topic editors: Jian Xu, Jia Chen Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/78316/innovation-in-fluorescent-probe-design-for-cell-analysis
