Innovation in the Media and Creative Industries, Insights from the Media Cymru Innovation Conference 2026

This Research Topic follows PLAYBACK, Media Cymru’s Conference and Showcase, held at Cardiff University from 15 to 17 September 2026, and organised by Cardiff University’s Centre for the Creative Economy. The conference showcased research that can make the media and creative industries greener, fairer, globally connected, and economically sustainable.Authors from the conference are invited to submit full-length versions of their research. Contributions should address at least one of the conference’s four themes, which reflect Media Cymru’s strategic pillars:• Green: the media’s role in tackling the climate crisis, from media content to sustainable production and energy-efficient infrastructure.• Fair: diversity, inclusion, representation and accessibility in media content and production, including community and minority language media.• Global: international co-productions and partnerships, export of creative content, global audiences and markets, and place-based innovation.• Growth: creative entrepreneurship, media business models, creative clusters, skills and talent pipelines, and the impact of emerging technologies such as AI, XR and gaming. We welcome work that can inform future practice and policy, including practice-based research and studies that bridge academia and industry. Full manuscripts will go through a peer review process separate from the conference abstract review.
