Innovations and Outcomes in Robotic Genitourinary Surgery: A Focus on Single-Port and Multiport Systems
Robotic surgery has revolutionized the field of genitourinary surgery over the past two decades, providing new possibilities for precision, minimally invasive intervention, and improved patient outcomes. Despite these advances, there is considerable debate regarding the comparative advantages of single-port (SP) versus multiport (MP) robotic systems, especially as these technologies rapidly evolve. Recent studies analyzing oncological, functional, and perioperative outcomes have yielded mixed results, and the integration of novel platforms presents fresh challenges related to workflow, instrumentation, and training. Ongoing advancements in surgical robotics technology, combined with emerging evidence from major urologic procedures—such as prostatectomies, nephrectomies, cystectomies, and reconstructive surgeries—highlight a growing need to critically evaluate safety, feasibility, efficiency, and the patient experience. However, comprehensive overviews remain limited, particularly regarding real-world adoption, best practices, and the translation of innovations into routine clinical care. This Research Topic aims to gather, integrate, and advance knowledge on the clinical impact, technical evolution, and practical adoption of both single-port and multiport robotic platforms in genitourinary surgery. Our objective is to highlight comparative data, identify gaps in existing literature, and foster dialogue around emerging tools and multidisciplinary approaches. Key questions to be addressed include: How do single-port and multiport systems differ in terms of perioperative outcomes, safety, and patient-centered results across various urologic procedures? What technological innovations are shaping best practices, and how can these be leveraged for training and integration? We also seek to define future directions and set the agenda for high-quality, patient-focused robotic urologic care. This Research Topic will consider original research, reviews, meta-analyses, and opinion articles focused on clinical, technical, and implementation dimensions of robotic genitourinary surgery. Submissions should be relevant to both single-port and multiport robotic approaches. Areas outside the application of robotic platforms in genitourinary surgery fall outside the scope of this collection. To gather further insights in advances and real-world application of robotic genitourinary surgery, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Comparative effectiveness of single-port and multiport robotic platforms- Innovations in robotic instrumentation, imaging, and intraoperative guidance- Perioperative efficiency, workflow integration, and surgical ergonomics- Surgeon learning curves, training, and credentialing in new robotic technologies- Functional and patient-centered outcomes across major urologic procedures- Implementation science and barriers to real-world adoption- Policy, cost-effectiveness, and the future of robotic genitourinary surgeryProf. A.
