Innovations in Anatomical Lobectomy: Patient-Centered Outcomes

The field of thoracic surgery has entered an exciting era of advancements in anatomical lobectomy, driven by both surgical and non-surgical innovations. Recent developments encompass extended resections, lobar and sublobar resections, and non-intubated lobectomy, all enhanced by the application of video- and robotic-assisted surgery. Furthermore, 3-dimensional lung reconstruction forms part of these direct advancements, alongside non-surgical progress such as prehabilitation, new neoadjuvant and adjuvant regimens, robotic-guided bronchoscopy, and the increased availability of surgical education centers. These holistic advancements fundamentally transform operability and resectability, with novel surgical instruments reshaping video-assisted thoracic surgery. Robotic-assisted thoracic surgery is also witnessing considerable growth with the multiport technique, and the emergence of single-port approaches. Preoperative 3D segment planning offers unparalleled visualization and aids in crafting a precise surgical strategy that aligns with oncology board decisions. This Research Topic aims to explore how these surgical and non-surgical developments can be fine-tuned to improve decision-making processes and potentially enhance patient outcomes. It seeks to unravel the intricate links between such advances and patient-centered metrics including postoperative complications categorized by the Clavien-Dindo score, recurrence-free and overall survival, regional and distant recurrence rates, mortality causes, return to activity, and quality of life. By examining these connections, the Research Topic aspires to tailor advancements for optimal patient care.To gather further insights in these boundaries, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:-Predictive models and decision-making analyses in lobectomy-Causal inference models connecting surgical advances to outcomes-The influence of prehabilitation and novel therapies on lobectomy procedures-Impact of robotic and video-assisted techniques on patient safety and recovery-Comprehensive reviews and meta-analyses elucidating treatment algorithms for improved patient outcomes Topic editors: Alexandros Moschovas, Michel Gonzalez, Yan Wang Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/77266/innovations-in-anatomical-lobectomy-patient-centered-outcomes
