Innovations in Electronic Systems for Sustainable and Adaptive Environments
The field of electronic systems for smart environments is rapidly evolving, transforming the interactions between humans and their surroundings across various domains. Recent advances in electronics, sensor technologies, and embedded systems are driving the integration of intelligent monitoring and adaptive control in contexts such as agriculture, animal welfare, and smart homes. These technological leaps are enabling continuous data collection and real-time analysis, fostering environments that respond dynamically to changing needs and conditions. Despite impressive progress, significant challenges remain, including optimizing resource use, ensuring system reliability in heterogeneous conditions, and enabling seamless, energy-efficient connectivity. Debate continues over the best practices for integrating diverse technologies, mitigating privacy and security risks, and translating laboratory innovations into scalable real-world solutions.State-of-the-art research has yielded impressive results in areas such as automated farming, where intelligent systems control irrigation and fertilization based on sensor feedback, and in animal husbandry, where wearable sensors offer early alerts on health and welfare issues. In the context of smart homes, AI-powered devices are enhancing energy management, safety, and user comfort. Yet, many studies highlight persistent obstacles, such as the need for low-power, robust communications, the challenge of integrating multidisciplinary data streams, and the importance of long-term reliability in uncontrolled environments. There remain key gaps in assessing system efficacy, usability for end-users, and the scalability of prototypes to larger, more diverse settings. Ongoing studies are probing how to best achieve seamless integration of electronics, IoT, and AI for maximum societal benefit, sustainable practices, and improved quality of life. This Research Topic aims to consolidate novel advancements, practical solutions, and conceptual breakthroughs in electronic systems designed for smart environments. The objectives are to showcase cutting-edge designs in sensors, embedded electronics, and adaptive algorithms; to investigate the interplay of IoT and AI for context-aware decision-making; and to examine practical deployments that demonstrate measurable benefits in sectors such as agriculture, animal welfare, and domestic automation.
