Innovations in Food Authentication: Securing Quality and Trust through Advanced Chemometrics
Food authentication is an essential area within food chemistry, focusing on verifying the identity, quality, and origin of food products to protect consumers and ensure market integrity. As the global food supply chain becomes increasingly complex, the risk of fraud, mislabeling, and adulteration has grown, raising urgent questions about reliability and transparency in food systems. Traditional methods such as melissopalynology and basic compositional analyses, while valuable, often lack the precision and scalability required for modern authenticity challenges. Recent research has highlighted the promise of advanced chemometric approaches—leveraging statistical and computational tools to interpret complex chemical data—in distinguishing authentic from fraudulent products based on their chemical fingerprints. Despite these advancements, there remain gaps in developing standardized methodologies, integrating bioinformatics, and translating laboratory-scale innovations into practical regulatory tools. This Research Topic aims to consolidate and extend current knowledge on the use of chemometrics in food authentication. It encourages contributions that explore novel analytical methodologies, validate emerging biomarkers of authenticity, and evaluate the interplay between chemical composition and production systems. The goal is to promote a comprehensive understanding of how data-driven models can enhance the traceability, quality, and credibility of food products. By fostering collaborations among researchers, industry experts, and policymakers, this Research Topic aspires to strengthen frameworks for global food safety and consumer confidence, while supporting the Sustainable Development Goals of Zero Hunger and Responsible Consumption and Production. To gather further insights into the applications and implications of chemometric tools in food authentication, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Development and validation of chemometric methods for food authentication• Identification of reliable chemical markers and bioactive compounds for origin verification• Integration of bioinformatics and machine learning in authenticity assessment• Case studies demonstrating practical applications in diverse food matrices• Regulatory perspectives and standardization of analytical protocols• Bridging traditional and modern techniques for robustness and scalability• Sustainability implications of food authentication technologies Topic editors: Ivana Sofrenić, Nicoleta-Aurelia Chira, Joao C.
