Innovations in ocular biomechanics for precision medicine
The field of ocular biomechanics is dedicated to understanding the mechanical stresses affecting the eye, such as intraocular pressure fluctuations, extraocular muscle forces, and external mechanical loads. Maintaining the mechanical homeostasis of ocular tissues is crucial for preserving eye shape and normal visual function. When this balance is disrupted, eye conditions such as glaucoma, myopia, keratoconus, and squint can develop. Ocular biomechanics merges mechanical engineering principles with ophthalmology, offering insights into eye function and facilitating the development of advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tools. Despite considerable progress, challenges remain, particularly in translating biomechanical insights into clinical practice, advancing early diagnosis, and personalizing treatment strategies. Further investigation into the relationship between mechanical forces and cellular responses in ocular tissues is essential. This Research Topic aims to further explore ocular biomechanics by highlighting innovative research that bridges fundamental biomechanical principles with clinical applications. The primary goals are to unveil the pathogenesis mechanisms of eye diseases from a mechanobiological perspective and to develop biomechanics-based diagnostic methods and treatment strategies. By doing so, the research has the potential to revolutionize ocular healthcare, enabling earlier disease detection, more accurate prognostic assessments, and tailored therapeutic interventions. To gather further insights into the diverse realm of ocular biomechanics, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Optimization strategy of intervention and treatments for eye disease using biomechanical methods• Modeling and biomechanical simulation of ocular tissues• Biomechanical properties of ocular tissues and the latest detection technology• Artificial intelligence combined with biomechanics in the precision diagnosis of ocular diseases• Mechanobiology mechanisms of ocular diseases• Eye trauma and its biomechanical mechanism• Basic research related to ocular biomechanics• Interdisciplinary research on ocular biomechanicsWe encourage submissions of various article types, including short communications, case studies, review papers, and original research articles. Important Note for Submissions: This Research Topic strictly focuses on rigorous biomechanical and mechanobiological investigations. Purely clinical studies, or those that solely rely on clinical outcomes or standard commercial instrument readouts without a deep biomechanical analysis, are outside the scope and will not be considered.
