Innovations in Reconstructive Surgery Following Soft-Tissue Oncologic Resection
Reconstructive surgery following resection of cutaneous and soft-tissue malignancies sits at the intersection of oncologic safety, functional preservation, and aesthetic outcome. As surgical oncology moves toward increasingly complex, function- and appearance-sparing resections, the reconstructive strategies used to restore form and function have become central to overall patient outcomes, and yet innovations in this space are often published across fragmented, discipline-specific outlets rather than a unified venue. From microsurgical free flaps to oncoplastic techniques and staged reconstruction protocols, this field is evolving rapidly, driven by both technical advances and growing recognition of quality-of-life as a core outcome measure. This Research Topic aims to consolidate research on reconstructive strategies used after oncologic resection, spanning cutaneous and superficial mesenchymal malignancies, and complex anatomic sites. The goal is to capture technical innovation alongside decision-making frameworks: how reconstructive choice is integrated into oncologic planning, how timing and technique affect outcomes, and how multidisciplinary teams coordinate resection and reconstruction. We particularly welcome work that connects surgical technique to measurable functional or quality-of-life outcomes. To capture the breadth and depth of current research, we welcome articles including but not limited to the following topics:• Reconstructive techniques following resection of cutaneous and superficial mesenchymal malignancies.• Soft-tissue reconstruction after sarcoma resection, including flap-based and function-preserving approaches.• Oncoplastic and complex trunk/head-and-neck reconstruction.• Microsurgical and flap innovations in oncologic reconstruction.• Immediate versus delayed reconstruction: timing and multidisciplinary planning.• Functional, aesthetic, and quality-of-life outcomes after oncologic reconstruction. We invite plastic and reconstructive surgeons, surgical oncologists, and multidisciplinary teams to share their latest technical, clinical, and outcomes-based work. Real-world studies, technique innovations, and long-term outcomes data are especially encouraged. We invite you to submit Original Research, Review, Systematic Review, Case Report, and Clinical Trial articles. Please note: manuscripts consisting solely of bioinformatics, computational analysis, or predictions of public databases which are not accompanied by validation (independent clinical or patient cohort, or biological validation in vitro or in vivo, which are not based on public databases) are not suitable for publication in this journal.
