Innovations in Upper Limb Reconstruction and Prosthetics

The domain of upper limb prostheses, covering the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder, is experiencing a transformative era driven by innovative advancements in materials science, engineering, and clinical practice. Recent shifts toward the utility of customized implants—most notably via 3D printing technologies—have permitted precision and personalization, aiming for optimized patient-specific outcomes. As orthopedic surgeons seek to refine and advance methods for bone and soft tissue reconstruction, the integration of these new technologies marks a significant departure from traditional reconstructive practices and toward more dynamic and adaptable solutions. This Research Topic aims to consolidate and highlight the innovations in upper limb prosthetics and implants, demonstrating their intersection with surgical precision and patient experience. Through targeted exploration of new biomaterials with enhanced osseointegration properties, alongside modular implant designs that offer adaptability across complex reconstruction scenarios, this Topic aims to delineate improvements in procedural outcomes for post-trauma and degenerative disorders. The adoption of robotic and sensor-assisted surgical interventions serves as the forefront of ongoing research, aspiring to enhance participative surgical precision and efficacy in prosthetic applications. To gather further insights into the broad landscape of advanced distal upper limb prosthetic surgery, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Biomaterial advancements and their role in enhancing prosthetic efficacy- 3D printing technologies in custom implant design and fabrication- AI-driven diagnostics enhancing precision in surgical planning- Surgical robotics and sensor-assisted technologies- New kinesiotherapy technologies- Update of biomechanical functions of upper limb articulation leading to new designs- Update of rehabilitation processThis Research Topic seeks to unify contributions from across orthopedic surgery, biomedical engineering, material science, and rehabilitative medicine, with an embedded focus on integrating digital workflows, AI automation, and improved patient-reported outcomes. Scholars are encouraged to share transformative studies that may not only address existing medical challenges but also establish new standards for excellence in distal upper limb reconstruction.
