Innovative Applications of Solid Waste-Based Materials in Geotechnical Engineering

With the acceleration of global urbanization, the substantial generation of industrial by-products such as fly ash and slag, along with construction waste like waste concrete, is creating significant environmental pressure. At the same time, geotechnical engineering, as a cornerstone of infrastructure construction, urgently requires a green and low-carbon transformation to reduce reliance on traditional non-renewable materials. In this context, the incorporation of solid waste-based materials in geotechnical and civil engineering offers a dual solution, supporting sustainable development while addressing waste management challenges. This topic is therefore timely and highly relevant for ecological protection, resource efficiency, and the advancement of modern infrastructure systems.Although interest in waste-based and sustainable materials is growing, existing research still lacks systematic integration across material development, engineering application, and environmental assessment. Important gaps remain in understanding long-term performance under complex geotechnical conditions, including soil behavior, soil–structure interaction, and the durability of infrastructure materials. In addition, there is a need to better connect ground improvement and consolidation techniques, grouting methods, and sustainable engineering practices within a unified framework. This Research Topic seeks to address these challenges by bringing together advances in material innovation, engineering performance, and environmental evaluation. It aims to strengthen the link between laboratory research, field applications, and long-term infrastructure performance, while promoting sustainable and low-carbon approaches in geotechnical and civil engineering. Ultimately, this collection supports the safe, efficient, and large-scale application of innovative materials and techniques in infrastructure development. This Research Topic welcomes submissions on the following themes, but is not limited to:• Ground improvement and consolidation techniques, including innovative and sustainable approaches• Grouting methods and soil–structure interaction/performance• Durability and long-term performance of infrastructure materials• Sustainable and low-carbon materials and practices in geotechnical and civil engineering• Soil behavior and its implications for engineering design and performance• Modification and performance testing of industrial by-product- and construction waste-based materials• In-situ applications and case studies in foundations, embankments, and slope engineering• Environmental risk assessment and pollution control technologies for engineering materialsManuscripts with strong practical engineering relevance, innovative methodologies, and clear contributions to sustainable infrastructure development are particularly encouraged.
