Innovative Bio-Packaging: Enhancing Food Safety and Shelf-Life
Food safety is always advancing to address the emerging concerns about contamination and food preservation. As demand for safer and longer-lasting food items continues to rise, the focus has shifted towards innovative solutions, such as bio-packaging, that promise to revolutionize the industry. Bio-packaging materials have been an alternative to conventional packaging materials and can exhibit an antimicrobial potential, enhancing food safety. Currently, the field delves into investigating the potential of bio-packaging materials to assess their environmental impact and implications for food safety and maintaining nutritional and fresh qualities. This Research Topic aims to disseminate studies that assess the potential of bio-packaging materials to enhance food safety and extend shelf life. Additionally, we are seeking works that answer key questions regarding the efficacy of different bio-packaging alternatives, their interaction with various types of food items, and their environmental sustainability. Finally, this topic aims to bridge the gaps in food preservation strategies and scalable solutions for the food industry. To gather further insights in the dynamic context of bio-packaging to enhance food safety, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Utilization of waste to biopolymers and bio-packaging• Understanding the antimicrobial properties of bio-packaging materials• Using natural active agents and emerging methods (e.g., nanoencapsulation, nanocomposites, controlled release technologies) to enhance antimicrobial performance of bio-packaging • Innovative methodologies for evaluating the impact of bio-packaging on food spoilage, safety and nutritional quality• Novel methods of developing and applying bio-packaging • Comparative studies of traditional versus bio-packaging in extending shelf life• Environmental sustainability and life cycle analysis of bio-packaging solutions• Policy and regulation frameworks for the adoption of bio-packaging in the food industryWe invite contributions that span various article types such as original research, review articles, case studies, and technological reports.
