Innovative Computational Simulation Techniques for Construction Materials

This Research Topic invites contributions on recent advances in computational–numerical simulations and constitutive modeling of construction materials, with applications in structural engineering and design. It focuses on innovative approaches to capturing the behavior of construction materials and structural systems under coupled mechanical and environmental loading conditions. Particular emphasis is placed on computational–constitutive modeling approaches that enhance the understanding, prediction, and design of structural components and systems with respect to durability, serviceability, safety, rehabilitation, resilience, and long-term performance. Applications involving smart and multifunctional construction materials, as well as materials subjected to thermal, electrical, and magnetic fields and harsh environmental conditions, are also within the scope of this issue. This Research Topic also welcomes AI-enhanced approaches to computational mechanics, including physics-informed neural networks and surrogate modeling, as tools for simulating, predicting, and accelerating the analysis of construction materials and structural systems. Overall, this Research Topic seeks to compile high-quality contributions that advance computational modeling, constitutive theory, and simulation methodologies for construction materials and structural systems, while emphasizing the integration of advanced simulations into structural engineering analysis, performance assessment, design practice, and maintenance–rehabilitation planning. The key objectives of this Research Topic are the following: • Advanced constitutive models for predicting the long-term performance of construction materials under mechanical and environmental loading conditions, including durability, aging, damage, fracture, and corrosion.• Computational–constitutive modeling approaches for structural assessment, rehabilitation, and resilient infrastructure design.• Analysis, design, and long-term performance assessment of construction materials and structural systems through coupled analyses (displacement–temperature, displacement–moisture, and displacement–pore pressure interactions), multi-scale computational modeling (macro-, meso-, and micro-scale), and multi-physics simulations (thermal, electrical, magnetic, and fluid-flow effects).• Laboratory testing and field-scale assessment, numerical simulations, and design of smart, composite, and multifunctional construction materials.• Data-driven, machine learning-assisted, and hybrid computational modeling techniques in structural engineering and design, including physics-informed neural networks and surrogate modeling for AI-enhanced computational mechanics.
