Innovative Data-Driven Approaches for Sustainable Water and Wastewater Management: Integrating Hydrogeological, Geochemical, and Technological Insights

Water scarcity, contamination, and inefficient wastewater treatment continue to challenge sustainable development and environmental protection globally. As water demands increase due to population growth, industrialization, and climate change, there is a critical need for innovative, integrative approaches to water and wastewater management. This Research Topic aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration by bringing together traditional knowledge in hydrogeology, geochemistry, and water engineering with emerging data technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and advanced geospatial analysis. This collection seeks to highlight how data-driven innovations can enhance our understanding, monitoring, prediction, and management of water and wastewater systems. The aim is to encourage contributions that propose novel, practical solutions with direct implications for improving water security, wastewater reuse, contaminant mitigation, and environmental resilience. We welcome contributions that span theory, application, and case studies, with a strong emphasis on technological innovation and sustainability. Original research articles, review papers, conceptual frameworks, and field-based case studies are all invited. Submissions should demonstrate clear relevance to real-world challenges and policy needs, and provide insights that could guide future research, investment, or governance strategies in the water sector.Key themes include, but are not limited to:• Sustainable water and wastewater management strategies using AI, IoT, and data analytics• Machine learning for predicting groundwater contamination and treatment efficiency• Geochemical and hydrogeological modeling to support water quality assessment and resource planning• Smart monitoring and management of decentralized and urban wastewater systems• Decision-support systems and digital twins for water infrastructure optimization• Integrated water reuse, recycling, and recovery techniques• Resilient water systems under climate change scenarios• Nature-based solutions and circular economy approaches in wastewater treatment Topic editors: Dr. Muhammad Yousuf Baloch, Mariusz Ptak, Predrag Ilić, Lalita Rana Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/69908/innovative-data-driven-approaches-for-sustainable-water-and-wastewater-management-integrating-hydrogeological-geochemical-and-technological-insights
