Innovative Dietary Strategies to Target Age Related Immunosenescence and Chronic Immune Disorders

The field of clinical nutrition is increasingly recognized for its critical role in supporting immune health throughout the lifespan, particularly as individuals age. Age-related immune decline, or immunosenescence, significantly heightens susceptibility to infections, chronic diseases, and diminished vaccine responses in older populations. Recent research has highlighted the influence of diet in modulating immune function, with particular attention to nutrients and bioactive compounds such as antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and polyphenols. While several studies have demonstrated that dietary interventions can temper inflammation and bolster immune surveillance, the precise mechanisms and optimal nutritional patterns remain areas of active investigation. Ongoing debates focus on the efficacy of specific diets versus individualized approaches, and whether targeted supplementation or whole dietary patterns yield the most benefit. Despite advances in understanding, robust clinical guidelines for leveraging nutrition to prevent or reverse immunosenescence are still lacking. This Research Topic aims to assemble cutting-edge research and expert insights on innovative dietary approaches for preventing or mitigating age-related immune decline. The primary objectives are to identify specific dietary patterns, nutrients, and bioactive components that sustain immune competence in older adults, to elucidate underlying biological mechanisms, and to inform the development of practical, evidence-based dietary guidelines for healthy aging. By bringing together studies on dietary interventions, mechanistic pathways, and translational applications, this collection seeks to clarify whether, and how, nutritional strategies can promote longevity and enhance immune resilience during aging. The scope of this Research Topic encompasses research and review articles that examine how diet influences immune function in the context of aging, within both clinical and community-based settings. It particularly encourages submissions that incorporate rigorous trial designs, mechanistic insights, longitudinal analyses, or population-based approaches. To gather further insights into nutritional immunology and healthy aging, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• The impact of specific nutrients (antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, etc.) on immunosenescence.• Dietary patterns and their association with markers of immune health in older populations.• Mechanisms by which nutrients and dietary compounds modulate immune responses.• Interventions targeting inflammation and oxidative stress through nutrition.• Personalized nutrition approaches to address variability in immune aging.• Dietary guidelines and recommendations to prevent immune decline in aging.• Translational studies linking nutrition, immune biomarkers, and health outcomes in older adults. We welcome a wide range of article types, including original research, reviews, clinical trials, opinion pieces, mini-reviews, and meta-analyses.
