Innovative Integrated Approaches to Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation and Pain Management
Pain, motor dysfunction, and functional impairment are major determinants of disability across musculoskeletal, sports-related, spinal, and orofacial conditions. Contemporary musculoskeletal medicine is increasingly moving toward integrated and mechanism-based approaches that combine neurophysiology, motor control science, physical rehabilitation, neuromodulation, regenerative strategies, and individualized therapeutic interventions to restore function and quality of life. This Research Topic aims to bring together translational and clinical research investigating innovative strategies to improve pain control, motor performance, functional recovery, and rehabilitation outcomes across musculoskeletal, orthopedic, and sports-related disorders. The collection bridges mechanistic understanding from neuroscience and rehabilitation physiology with clinical translation, emphasizing how integrated interventions—rather than single modalities—optimize pain management, neural and motor function, tissue recovery, and physical performance. We particularly welcome research exploring combinations of neuromodulation with exercise and regenerative medicine, multimodal pain mechanisms, and how neurophysiological principles inform musculoskeletal rehabilitation. Topics include:• Non-invasive and peripheral neuromodulation (transcranial magnetic stimulation, transcranial electrical stimulation, peripheral magnetic stimulation) for musculoskeletal pain and motor function• Neurorehabilitation, motor control, motor learning, and neuroplasticity in recovery of function following orthopedic injury and musculoskeletal disorders• Musculoskeletal and orthopedic rehabilitation targeting pain, mobility, strength, proprioception, and physical function• Rehabilitation and performance in sports and physically active populations• Pain mechanisms and multimodal approaches for acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain• Orthobiological and regenerative approaches (bone marrow aspirate, bone marrow aspirate concentrate, platelet-based therapies, cell-based interventions)• Integration of neuromodulation with exercise, rehabilitation, and regenerative strategies• Temporomandibular disorders, craniofacial pain, and rehabilitation of orofacial musculoskeletal function• Neurophysiological, biomechanical, imaging, and functional biomarkers predicting treatment responsePersonalized and precision rehabilitation approaches in musculoskeletal disorders Topic editors: Luciano Maia Alves Ferreira, Marcelo Silva, João Eduardo De Araujo Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/87024/innovative-integrated-approaches-to-musculoskeletal-rehabilitation-and-pain-management
