Innovative Methods for Diagnosing and Managing Oral Diseases and Conditions
The field of oral health and dental medicine encompasses a wide range of diseases and conditions affecting the teeth, periodontium, oral mucosa, jaws, and associated structures. Periodontal and peri-implant diseases, endodontic and periapical lesions, dental caries, oral mucosal disorders, malocclusion, craniofacial conditions, and postoperative complications remain major clinical challenges worldwide. Recent research has advanced understanding of microbial dysbiosis, host–microbe interactions, inflammation, tissue destruction, pain mechanisms, and patient-specific risk factors. Diagnostic developments, including advanced imaging, biomarkers, microbiological profiling, digital workflows, and artificial intelligence, offer opportunities for earlier and more precise disease detection. However, variations in diagnostic criteria, limited validation of emerging technologies, inconsistent treatment protocols, and difficulties translating laboratory findings into routine care continue to hinder progress. Further interdisciplinary investigation is needed to establish reliable diagnostic tools, evaluate innovative interventions, and improve long-term clinical outcomes. This Research Topic aims to examine innovative and evidence-based methods for diagnosing, preventing, and managing oral diseases and conditions across dental specialties. It will consider how biological, clinical, digital, imaging-based, and patient-centred approaches can support early detection, individualized treatment planning, disease control, tissue preservation, and functional rehabilitation. The Research Topic will also address the effectiveness, safety, cost-effectiveness, and clinical applicability of emerging technologies and treatment strategies, while encouraging collaboration between periodontology, implant dentistry, endodontics, prosthodontics, restorative dentistry, orthodontics, paediatric dentistry, oral surgery, oral medicine, and related fields. To gather further insights in the interdisciplinary diagnosis, prevention, and management of oral diseases and conditions across the life course and dental specialties, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Novel diagnostic methods for periodontal, peri-implant, endodontic, restorative, mucosal, and other oral diseases• Biochemical, microbiological, genetic, immunological, and salivary biomarkers• Artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital imaging, and computer-assisted diagnosis• Periodontal and peri-implant disease prevention, non-surgical treatment, and surgical management• Pulpal and periapical disease, periodontal–endodontic lesions, and regenerative endodontics• Dental caries prevention, minimally invasive restorative care, and dental materials• Prosthodontic rehabilitation and maintenance of oral and peri-implant tissues• Orthodontic treatment, occlusal factors, retention, and periodontal or dental complications• Paediatric and adolescent oral health, developmental conditions, and early disease detection• Oral mucosal diseases, potentially malignant disorders, and oral cancer screening• Oral surgery, bone regeneration, soft-tissue management, and minimally invasive procedures• Antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and host-modulation therapies• Local and systemic drug delivery systems, biomaterials, and tissue-engineering strategies• Digital treatment planning, navigation, robotics, and personalized dentistry• Patient education, behavioural interventions, prevention programmes, adherence, and quality of life• Clinical trials, observational studies, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and translational research evaluating integrated oral healthcare pathways Topic editors: Marwa Madi, Aditi Chopra, Karthik Sivaraman Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/86321/innovative-methods-for-diagnosing-and-managing-oral-diseases-and-conditions
