Innovative Nonlinear Control Methods for Smart Grid and Energy Systems
Modern electrical grids are undergoing rapid transformation driven by the large-scale integration of intermittent renewable energy sources, distributed energy resources (DERs), dynamic loads, and electric vehicle fleets. These additions introduce significant non-linearities, uncertainties, low-inertia dynamics, and complex multi-timescale couplings that challenge conventional linear and linearized control strategies. To manage & maintain grid stability, enhance energy efficiency, and optimize real-time power dispatch, advanced nonlinear control methodologies are essential. Techniques such as sliding mode control, model predictive control (MPC), adaptive and robust control, Lyapunov-based approaches, and data-driven/neural-augmented nonlinear control provide the necessary flexibility and robustness to handle high-penetration renewable scenarios, sudden disturbances/perturbation, and fluctuating operational conditions. This Research Topic aims to bring together leading theoretical advances, practical formulations, and case studies exploring innovative nonlinear control and energy management techniques for modern energy systems. We invite contributions that advance mathematical modeling, control synthesis, energy management, validation on transmission, distribution, and microgrid levels. We welcome original research and review articles addressing, but not limited to, the following core themes:· Advanced nonlinear and adaptive control strategies for grid-tied power electronic converters and inverters· Nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) for energy management systems (EMS), microgrids, and multi-energy networks· Robust, sliding mode, and passivity-based control for power systems with high renewable and DER penetration· Data-driven, machine learning, and reinforcement learning-assisted nonlinear control for grid stability and voltage/frequency regulation· Nonlinear control frameworks for electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) systems, and hybrid energy storage systems (BESS)· Distributed, cooperative, and decentralized nonlinear control for autonomous and networked microgrids· Stability analysis, disturbance rejection, and fault ride-through (FRT) capabilities under severe nonlinear disturbances· Optimal energy management, dynamic dispatch, and demand-side response using nonlinear optimization techniques· Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, real-time simulation, and field validation of nonlinear control architectures in smart grids· Modern control strategies for energy management in electric vehicle charging systems· Smart techniques of speed control for hybrid electric vehicles (EVs).Submission InformationWe welcome Original Research, Review, Mini Review, Perspective, and Brief Research Report articles presenting novel theoretical formulations, simulation benchmarks, and experimental validations that push the boundaries of control theory in smart grid applications.
