Innovative Platforms for Personalized Oncology: Organoids and Oncolytic Microorganisms
In the field of oncology, there is a growing recognition of the inadequacies of conventional tumor models in capturing the complexity of tumor heterogeneity and drug resistance mechanisms. These limitations impede the development of personalized cancer therapies. Patient-derived organoids and oncolytic microorganisms, such as engineered bacteria and viruses, have emerged as potent tools in addressing these challenges. Organoids provide a robust ex-vivo platform for functional drug testing, allowing for an accurate representation of individual tumors in a three-dimensional, biologically relevant environment. On the other hand, oncolytic microorganisms are advancing as promising therapeutic agents capable of selectively targeting tumors, modulating the immune response, and delivering anticancer treatments. These platforms collectively represent significant advancements in the field, enhancing the prediction of treatment responses and resistance in patients through clinically relevant models. This Research Topic aims to focus on the recent advancements, applications, and clinical integration of patient-derived organoids and oncolytic microorganisms in personalized oncology. The main objectives include understanding the development and utility of organoids as personalized ex-vivo models, the role of oncolytic microorganisms in targeted therapy, and how these platforms can elucidate intrinsic and acquired resistance mechanisms in cancer treatment. Furthermore, this topic seeks to explore the translational potential of these technologies from bench to bedside, thereby advancing individualized cancer treatment strategies. To gather further insights into the adoption of these innovative platforms in personalized oncology, we welcome contributions that address the following themes:- Development and characterization of patient-derived organoid models- Utilization of organoids in drug screening and predicting resistance- Co-culture systems that incorporate immune or stromal elements- Engineering and mechanism studies of oncolytic bacteria and viruses- Strategies for microbiome modulation in cancer therapy- Integration of omics data within functional tumor model frameworks- Applications of synthetic biology in therapeutic microorganism development- Clinical trials and translational research involving organoid or oncolytic platformsWe encourage submissions of Original Research, Review, Mini Review, and Perspective articles within these outlined themes.Dr. Matias Eliseo Melendez is partner at Clyons Life Sciences LTDA.
