Innovative Quantum Education and Workforce Development for the Quantum Era

Quantum science and technology are entering a new phase, with rapid progress in quantum computing, communication, sensing, and simulation now driving the creation of quantum-powered industries worldwide. This transformation demands a diverse, highly skilled, and adaptable workforce - far beyond the traditional population of quantum physicists. This article collection seeks contributions that advance education, training, and outreach for quantum science and technology at all levels and across all sectors. We are particularly interested in work that:o Bridges the gap between fundamental quantum science and practical quantum technology applications;o Addresses the urgent need to upskill professionals in sectors such as engineering, computer science, finance, health, policy, and management;o Presents research-based and evidence-supported strategies to make quantum topics engaging and accessible for broader and more diverse audiences. The collection aims to spotlight innovative approaches, methodologies, and resources that enable effective quantum literacy, build practical skills, and democratize access to quantum education. We welcome empirical studies, theoretical frameworks, reviews, toolkits, and case studies from around the globe.Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:o New curricula, pedagogical frameworks, and teaching resources for quantum technology education (pre-university, university, and lifelong learning)o Employer-driven and industry-aligned education models, including micro-credentials, bootcamps, and workforce upskillingo Outreach initiatives engaging underrepresented communities or non-traditional quantum learners (e.g., professionals in policy, business, and the arts)o Innovative use of educational technology (MOOCs, AR/VR, quantum games, AI tutors, remote labs, hands-on experiments, etc.)o Research on learning challenges and effective interventions in quantum educationo Communication tools and public engagement strategies demystifying quantum concepts for wider societyo Assessment methodologies for quantum literacy, skills, and competencieso Policy and infrastructure development for the quantum education ecosystem (local, national, or international)o Lifelong learning pathways and case studies of cross-disciplinary collaborationSubmission ExpectationsArticles should clearly demonstrate how the approach, research, or resource helps address contemporary challenges in quantum workforce development or science literacy. Submissions supported by empirical evaluation, interdisciplinary collaboration, or direct industry involvement are strongly encouraged. This collection may include article types such as Perspectives, Reviews, Brief Research Reports, Original Research, and Commentaries, in line with the journal’s standard categories. You can see full details on article types here: https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/quantum-science-and-technology/for-authors/article-types Who Should Contribute? We encourage contributions from educators, education researchers, quantum industry practitioners, e-learning experts, outreach professionals, and policy-makers. Submissions from multidisciplinary teams and underrepresented regions are especially welcome. We also encourage submissions from interdisciplinary teams spanning academia, industry, design, and innovation, especially contributions that examine how quantum education and training are being translated into practical workforce pathways, organizational models, and scalable learning experiences.
