Innovative Strategies for the Control of Foodborne Bacteria

Ensuring food safety remains a pivotal concern in the food industry, demanding continuous innovation and adaptation. While non-thermal methods like high-pressure processing, pulsed electric fields, and cold plasma have offered promising advances, a more integrated approach encompassing a broad spectrum of pathogen inactivation techniques is essential. Traditional thermal methods, although proven effective, often compromise food quality. In recent years, novel approaches, including biochemical and biological interventions, have emerged, expanding the toolbox available for enhancing food safety. These advancements prompt a need for a deeper understanding of how different techniques can be effectively applied and integrated to combat foodborne pathogens comprehensively. This Research Topic aims to provide a holistic overview of advancements in food safety technologies, addressing both thermal and non-thermal approaches and exploring novel methods that enhance food quality and safety. The primary objective is to examine various strategies for pathogen control, assess their interactions with food matrices, and evaluate their practical applications across diverse food systems. By addressing these multifaceted areas, the Research Topic seeks to offer a comprehensive insight into current and emerging practices in food safety, fostering innovative solutions to optimize both pathogen inactivation and food quality. The scope of this Research Topic extends beyond focusing solely on non-thermal methods to encapsulate a wide array of food safety techniques. We invite contributions that explore:• Advances in thermal and non-thermal pathogen inactivation methods.• Biochemical and biological approaches to pathogen control.• The integration of traditional and novel methods into existing food processing systems.• Challenges and solutions in industrial applications and consumer perception.• Innovations in packaging and storage to enhance pathogen control.• Regulatory and economic implications of adopting integrated food safety strategies. We welcome diverse manuscript types, including original research articles, reviews, and case studies that provide new insights or synthesize existing knowledge. Submissions that assess the synergy between different pathogen inactivation methods and those that propose forward-thinking applications are particularly encouraged.
