Innovative Structural Solutions and Materials for Sustainable Construction Practices

The building and construction industry is a major contributor to environmental degradation, accounting for approximately 60% of resource consumption, 30% of water usage, and over 35% of energy consumption globally. It is also responsible for at least 40% of CO2 emissions and generates between 20% and 40% of the world's solid waste. Given this significant environmental footprint, there is an urgent need for the sector to adopt more sustainable production models. Recent research in structural engineering and materials science has focused on developing alternatives that reduce the environmental impact of building solutions. Despite these efforts, there remain substantial gaps in knowledge, particularly in the integration of traditional and innovative materials, the long-term performance of sustainable solutions, and the scalability of these technologies. Addressing these gaps is crucial for advancing the field and meeting societal demands for sustainability. This research topic aims to provide a platform for the dissemination of innovative and original research and development in the field of sustainable building materials and structural solutions. We encourage authors to submit their original research articles, reviews, and practical applications and case studies. The primary objectives are to explore new sustainable building solutions, investigate the efficacy of traditional materials, and develop biocompatible and smart materials that can be integrated into modern construction practices. Specific questions to be addressed include: What are the most effective sustainable building materials currently available? How can traditional materials be optimized for modern use? What are the long-term impacts of these materials on environmental sustainability? To gather further insights into sustainable structural materials, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes: • Sustainable building solutions • Earthen building materials and techniques (e.g., rammed earth, adobe) • Biocompatible additives and natural strengthening of earth structures • Timber structures • Characterization and modeling of traditional materials • Sustainable additives and reinforcement techniques for concrete • Smart materialsBy exploring these themes, we aim to advance the understanding and application of sustainable materials in the construction industry, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable future.
