Innovative Sustainable Soil and Crop Management Strategies for Climate-Resilient Mediterranean Vineyards and Orchards
Climate change is increasingly challenging agricultural systems through rising temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, prolonged droughts, and more frequent extreme events. These pressures degrade soil functions, disrupt soil–plant interactions, and ultimately compromise crop productivity and stability. Such challenges are particularly relevant in Mediterranean perennial cropping systems, including vineyards, olive groves, and other fruit orchards, which are highly exposed to water scarcity and heat stress. In this context, sustainable soil and crop management is essential for preserving soil health, maintaining crop performance, and enhancing ecosystem resilience. However, addressing the growing complexity of climate-related stresses requires not only optimizing current practices but also developing innovative management strategies. Such approaches are critical for improving soil function, strengthening plant adaptation mechanisms, and supporting stable, productive agricultural systems while safeguarding long-term soil fertility and sustainability. The main goal of this Research Topic is to advance knowledge on sustainable and innovative soil and crop management strategies that enhance soil-plant interactions and strengthen resilience under increasing climate change pressures. It also aims to explore the potential of these strategies to support climate change adaptation by improving resource-use efficiency, maintaining soil health, sustaining crop productivity, and reducing environmental impacts. By bringing together multidisciplinary research and novel approaches, this Research Topic seeks to provide science-based insights and practical solutions to advance more resilient, sustainable, and productive agricultural systems. This Research Topic welcomes original contributions that explore sustainable and innovative soil and crop management strategies to enhance soil health, strengthen soil–plant interactions, and improve crop resilience under climate change. Emphasis is placed on Mediterranean vineyards, olive groves, and other orchard systems. This Research Topic welcomes Original Research Articles, Review Articles, and Case Studies. Interdisciplinary contributions that integrate agronomy, soil science, plant science, horticulture, environmental science, and sustainable agriculture are particularly encouraged.
