Innovative Technologies for Breastfeeding and Lactation Support

Breastfeeding remains one of the most effective interventions for improving infant nutrition, immunity, and long-term health outcomes, while also delivering significant benefits to maternal wellbeing. Despite decades of public health advocacy, breastfeeding initiation and continuation rates remain suboptimal in many populations, shaped by clinical, social, technological, and systemic barriers. Advancing lactation support today increasingly depends on the integration of interdisciplinary knowledge, from nursing care theories and clinical protocols to digital health platforms, medical devices, and e-health interventions, in order to deliver more personalized, accessible, and effective care to breastfeeding mothers and infants. This Research Topic invites multidisciplinary contributions from medicine, nursing, and allied health sciences that advance the theoretical, clinical, and technological foundations of breastfeeding and lactation support. We are particularly interested in work that bridges care theory development with emerging digital and technological solutions, as well as studies that evaluate the real-world implementation of these innovations in diverse maternal and infant care settings. We welcome contributions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Development and validation of nursing care theories, models, and diagnostic frameworks related to breastfeeding and lactation• Digital health tools, mobile applications, and e-health platforms supporting lactation counseling, monitoring, and education• Medical devices and technologies designed to support breastfeeding initiation, milk expression, or infant feeding assessment• Telehealth and remote lactation support interventions, including their accessibility and effectiveness across diverse populations• Evidence-based clinical protocols and standardized care pathways for breastfeeding promotion and lactation management• Use of artificial intelligence, wearable technology, or clinical decision-support systems in lactation care• Barriers and facilitators to breastfeeding among vulnerable or socially disadvantaged populations• Educational strategies and training tools for healthcare professionals in lactation support• Integration of maternal mental health, social support, and communication theories into breastfeeding care modelsWe encourage submissions of Original Research, Systematic Review, Review, Mini Review, Methods, Case Report, Brief Research Report, Perspective, and Policy and Practice Reviews that advance interdisciplinary, evidence-based, and technology-enabled approaches to breastfeeding and lactation support.
