Insect-Based Bioresource and Insect Farming
Insects are vital biological resources that support ecosystems and human societies. Nearly one-third of global food production relies on insect pollination, highlighting their role in food security. They also provide valuable products such as silk, lac, honey, beeswax, royal jelly, and propolis, which have shaped traditional economies and cultures for centuries. In many regions, insects have long been consumed as food and have naturally served as nutritious feed for fish and livestock.Growing pressure on conventional feed sources like fishmeal and soybean meal has increased interest in insects as sustainable alternatives. Advances in science and technology now position insect farming as a key component of sustainable agriculture and the circular bioeconomy. Insects efficiently convert organic waste into high-quality protein- and lipid-rich biomass suitable for aquaculture, poultry, swine, and pet food.Given rapid research and commercialization in this field, consolidating recent findings is timely. This Research Topic highlights cutting-edge research and innovations in insect-based bioresources and farming systems. The primary goal of this Research Topic is to compile and disseminate recent scientific advancements and innovative developments in insect-based bioresources and insect farming.Specifically, the topic aims to:• Present state-of-the-art research on edible insects and insect-derived products;• Highlight technological innovations in insect mass rearing, automation, and processing;• Advance understanding of insect genetics, breeding, and productivity enhancement;• Explore the integration of insect farming into circular bioeconomy models;• Evaluate environmental sustainability through life cycle assessment and climate metrics;• Address regulatory frameworks, ethical considerations, and socio-economic implications;• Foster interdisciplinary dialogue among researchers, industry stakeholders, and policymakers;• Identify knowledge gaps and future research priorities to accelerate the sustainable growth of the insect farming sector. This Research Topic seeks to provide a scientific foundation that supports scalable, economically viable, and environmentally responsible insect-based production systems. The primary focus includes, but is not limited to, the following themes:• Edible Insects for Human Nutrition;• Insect-Based Animal Feed;• Insects in the Circular Bioeconomy;• Mass Rearing Technologies and Automation;• Genetics, Genomics, and Breeding;• Insect-Derived Bioactive Compounds;• Environmental Impacts and Life Cycle Assessment;• Regulatory, Ethical, and Socio-Economic Aspects;• Insect Farming and Climate Change Mitigation;• Emerging Innovations and Future Perspectives.
